Miami Dispatch: The Weekend at Art Basel

On Thursday afternoon I recall still feeling bitter about someone getting to the Gagosian's glittery Murakami painting before me as I headed to the David Bouley lunch at the Cartier dome. At the center of the creation (created for Art Basel) was a steel sculpture covered in bark and holding all of Cartier's greatest jewels. You could almost hear people say: "Honey, pick one: The Rothko or an Art Deco-era diamond necklace?" All those jewels sparkling like ice in an igloo-shaped outpost led me to wonder about the preoccupation with winter. The week also featured events in an Ice Palace and Swarovski Crystal Palace, respectively. It was eighty-degrees and no one needed a reminder of the weather back in New York.

That Thursday night was Tokion's dinner at the Standard where Mirabelle Marden and Neville Wakefield are offered Canton ginger mojitos and I chat with Yvonne Force Villareal (above right with Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn and Richard Phillips at the Jimmy Choo dinner) in Michael Kors with diamond cuffs. She is wearing an old a pair of marabou slippers. Classic Tom Ford. "My babies," Ford said once when he recognized them, Villareal tells me.

Friday: Philips hosted a lunch aboard a 1930s Art Deco yacht. Jennifer Rubell was cooking and limited edition artist-designed jewelry was for sale in what appears to be an ongoing trend. I peruse the wares, which include a vintage Man Ray malachite eye, Gavin Turk gum wad earrings and a tear catcher ring by Sam Taylor Wood, and try to decide.

After the lunch, Genevieve Jones meets me at the Standard to look at goodies from Adidas Y-3. When night falls, we grab a cocktail at the Raleigh in honor of Jimmy Choo and she's wearing Dolce and Gabbana black tulle. I spy Tamara Mellon (left with Richard Phillips) and then to a dinner at Mokai (with food flown in from Paris' Caviar Kaspia) hosted by the owners of The Webster, the new shopping emporium opening this spring in Miami. It's the best night. Larry Gagosian, Steve Cohen and Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn all eat baked potatos topped with caviar. We talk about the prevalence of Pucci (maybe it's Miami or that Matthew Williamson is in town. I see him later at the Florida Room) My charming dinner companion to the left, critic Dave Hickey jokes, "My ex-wife left with all the Pucci." So, he chose a dapper suit instead. Saturday night and I (left with Vogue's Serena Nikkhah) stop by the Y-3 store party in the Design District to show support for one of my favorite collaborations and then I'm headed back to the Raleigh for a panel and partying hosted by the Accompanied Literary Society to celebrate Assouline's Worth of Art and the pervasive question about art value. Jeffrey Deitch and Simon de Pury (right bottom with Brook Geahan) sit on the panel among others and I am reminded of the night before as they quote Dave Hickey. After the panel, we have a few mojitos before we head to our dinner atop the Delano with Lou Reed and a few cohorts to celebrate Julian Schnabel's film and prepare to bid goodbye to a wonderful time in Miami.

Other sightings? So many familiar faces out of context: Calvin Klein at lunch on Lincoln Road, the Misshapes Leigh Lezark and Max Minghella on Collins Avenue. Vito Schnabel and Blaine Trump at the book party for Bob Colacello. Also spotted: Pharrell, Barbara Wilhelm, Ambra Medda and Craig Robbins.
